u-blox unveils the UBX-R3, the proprietary LTE modem technology platform

u-blox, a global provider of wireless and positioning modules and chips, unveiled the UBX-R3, its proprietary LTE modem technology platform.

The platform supports the LARA-R3 module series, the only cellular product in the market to feature a combination of a Cat 1 LTE modem and GNSS technology, all developed by a single supplier.

Developed from the ground up by u-blox, the company says its UBX-R3 platform marks the first steps in a long-term strategy to establish leading LTE modem technology designed specifically for both the IoT and for M2M communication.

The LARA-R3 product series is a single-mode LTE Cat 1 module based on the UBX‑R3 LTE modem technology platform. It complements u-blox’s existing multimode LTE Cat 1 portfolio, which consists of the LARA-R2 and TOBY-R2 module series. In response to customer demand, LARA‑R3 additionally provides positioning information based on an on-board GNSS receiver. The single-mode LTE Cat 1 configuration meets increasing market demand for dedicated LTE products. It completes u-blox’s unique portfolio of products and technologies aimed specifically at applications for things connected to the internet (IoT).

Designed and qualified for reliable communication in harsh environments, the new professional-grade LARA‑R3 series comes with features that set it apart from the competition, including robust system design, long-term availability, and full component traceability.

The software-defined modem architecture in the UBX‑R3 modem platform offers specific features for IoT, like power minimisation, signaling optimisation and load and throughput control, all compatible with latest standard releases. System complexity has been adapted for LTE-only support and the device can be modified to meet specific customer requirements.

The new platform can support end-to-end security features (secure firmware boot, secure transport layer, secure interfaces, secure APIs) that are tightly integrated within the LARA‑R3 module. And as with all u-blox products, customers can rely on highly competent support.

“The UBX‑R3 platform and the LARA‑R3 product series showcase u-blox’s long-term strategy to provide the industry’s best LTE modem technology for the IoT and for M2M communication,” said Thomas Seiler, CEO of u-blox. “It is the result of u-blox’s integration of expertise brought on board by acquisitions for technology and talent, and involved the collaboration of a highly capable and experienced team of cellular R&D engineers in six locations.”

The new modem and product series affirm u-blox’s aim to deliver the best cellular connectivity technology for the IoT and puts the company in full control of its own product roadmap, features, quality and costs.
