Telefónica and Onstar reach agreement to provide global M2M connectivity

Telefónica’s M2M business consolidates its position in the automobile sector to support
OnStar’s future global expansion plans.

OnStar LLC, a subsidiary of General Motors, and Telefónica, through its Telefónica Digital and Telefonica Multinational Solutions divisions, have reached an agreement in which Telefónica will provide M2M connectivity, to OnStar-equipped General Motors vehicles in its future expansion to markets outside of the United States, Canada and China.

OnStar will rely on Telefónica’s extensive international GSM mobile standard network and its M2M automotive expertise to offer key services such as Automatic Crash Notification, Emergency Services, Turn-by-Turn Navigation, Diagnostics, Remote Mobile connectivity and more.

OnStar’s connected mobility systems are enabled by its Advanced Telematics Operating Management System. ATOMS is the one of the most-powerful automotive cloud platforms on the market today – connecting to more than 6 million OnStar customers globally.

“We are very pleased to have reached this agreement with OnStar, which is without doubt a market leader in connected services for the automotive industry. Our global M2M offering as well as our own experience in the sector allows us to provide a quality M2M service. This is a long term agreement and we will continue working so that both parties can benefit further”, said Carlos Morales, Global M2M Director at Telefónica Digital.

“Earlier this year we announced that OnStar is growing its global footprint,” said Jon Hyde, director of OnStar Global Expansion. “This partnership is one of the vital first steps in that process. Telefónica’s expertise in the global mobility market will help ensure our mutual success as we move forward.”

The initial agreement, the length of which was undisclosed, focuses on offering current OnStar services. The agreement has the potential over time to include the development and creation of future offerings between the two companies.
