Kamstrup and GridManager partner to deliver plug-and-play energy monitoring system for businesses

Denmark Denmark

Skanderborg & Viborg, Denmark. June 19, 2012 — In the wake of the first ever European Energy Efficiency Deal last week targeting a 15% energy saving by 2020, Kamstrup and GridManager have today announced that they will integrate GridManager’s Demand/Response solution, targeted industrial customers, with Kamstrup’s Advanced Metering Infrastructure system. The result is said to be a plug-and-play smart grid application which actively monitors and manages consumption 24/7.

According to GridManager’s CEO, Mogens Birkelund, the common solution will be a much needed tool for businesses in reaching their energy efficiency goals. With mandatory energy audits for large companies as one of the results of the EU Energy Efficiency Deal, GridManager and Kamstrup expect a growing interest in intelligent energy monitoring at large consumers.

Reducing the energy bill is a way for businesses to increase the bottom line. This can be achieved by saving energy or using energy when it is cheapest, and the integrated GridManager/Kamstrup solution will reportedly ensure that this is made easy. Not only will businesses save money, but utilities, too, will benefit from the solution as their peak loads will be reduced and they will get closer to meeting their energy efficiency targets.

As GridManager’s Mogens Birkelund explains, “There is a high and growing interest for Demand/Response solutions and many demonstration and pilot projects have been or are being carried out. At GridManager we have successfully implemented real-life and full-scale solutions resulting in significant energy cost savings for our customers. A vital part of the complete solution is to be able to measure energy consumption fast and accurately; and by partnering with Kamstrup, we ensure that our customers can use a standardised, well proven and high performance solution from a vendor, who is known for their high quality for this purpose.”

Henrik Baek Joergensen, Smart Grid Product Manager at Kamstrup, appreciates the new partnership and adds, “Kamstrup is happy to partner with a company, who is one of the leaders within Demand/Response solutions for businesses and industrial customers. Combining our two solutions will create significant value for our common customers.”

GridManager has created an adaptor between their Demand/Response system and Kamstrup’s head-end, Kamstrup UtiliDriver®. This will make integration between the two systems plug and play and support not only Kamstrup electricity meters, but also water, heat and cooling meters via standard wireless M-Bus. GridManager’s Demand/Response solution will gather consumption data, and an agent will actively monitor and manage consumption 24 hours a day. The constant monitoring is focused on both the customer’s equipment, but also — and equally important — energy price development and thus new opportunities for revenue in the intelligent power grid.

An example of a possible deployment for the combined solution is a shopping centre with hundreds of shops. By installing Kamstrup AMI with electricity, cooling and water meters and GridManager’s Demand/Response solution, each individual shop would see significant savings in its energy and water bill.

Kamstrup A/S serves energy companies and utilities with intelligent metering solutions for electricity, heat, cooling water and natural gas. Its solutions include smart grid applications, smart metering systems, energy and water meters. Kamstrup was founded in 1946 and is a 100% Danish company that today is represented in more than 50 countries.

GridManager provides a simple energy management tool that provides industrial and commercial consumers with savings of up to 35% by reducing and/or modifying energy consumption. The platform is based on the need of real smart grid – including load shifting, demand/response and grid balancing. The company was founded by Mogens Birkelund in February 2008, and commercial operations started December 2009. GridManager is an IBM Advanced Business Partner. In Denmark, GridManager has DONG Energy as a partner and in Spain works with the energy consulting firm Efirenova.
