The partnership with G4S will further extend Telefónica’s capabilities in the energy sector which is experiencing growth both in the UK and worldwide. Under the agreement, the M2M platform will deliver up to 1.4m SIMs and, at its peak, Telefónica UK will be rolling out 70k SIM’s per month to meet G4S Utility Services required roll out plans underpinning the delivery of a managed service from G4S.

Telefónica UK provides G4S with the partnership and strategic relationship we require to continue to be successful in the Utility Services sector.”

The extension of the contract follows the announcement of the G4S contract awarded to Telefonica UK in March 2011 for a range of services including areas such as data transfer and security.

“The energy sector is a key area of focus for our M2M team and I am delighted that we have been able to extend our partnership with G4S Utility Services. This agreement truly takes the M2M market and in particular our offering to another level,” said Gilli Coston, head of M2M at Telefónica UK. “We are constantly evolving our offering into the market with an ambition of providing a whole new range of services which changes what our customers and partners are able to leverage in terms of technologies and what they in turn can offer to the market.”

Telefónica and Visa Europe form strategic relationship

The agreement with Visa Europe builds on Telefónica and Visa Europe’s existing relationship in markets such as the UK and Ireland, formalising it at a Europe-wide level and establishing Visa Europe as Telefónica’s preferred partner for the issuance of branded payments cards and the development of related mobile payment services.

Mobile commerce is a key focus area of Telefónica’s new Digital unit which was formed to drive business opportunities within the digital space. Within Europe, Telefónica has launched a mobile wallet service to customers in the UK and is working to launch mobile wallets across its other operating businesses.

The relationship with Visa Europe will support the continued development of these services, while also helping to identify and drive new business opportunities in areas such as merchant offers, mobile point of sale, and contactless/NFC payments. It combines Visa’s scale and expertise in payments with Telefónica’s European mobile footprint, strong consumer brands and existing experience in mobile payments. The partnership will also provide Telefónica with access to expertise within the network of Visa’s partner companies.

“Visa has been an important partner for a number of years in Europe, helping us to trial, test and ultimately launch mobile payments products,” said Joaquin Mata, director of Financial Services at Telefónica Digital. “This market has enormous untapped potential and through this partnership with Visa Europe we aim to unlock significant new business opportunities.”

Mariano Dima, executive vice president of Product and Marketing Solutions at Visa Europe, added: “We are delighted to have been appointed as Telefónica’s preferred mobile payments partner in Europe. We’ve worked together for many years to deliver mobile payments and service showcases across some of the most innovative countries in Europe. This partnership will deliver mainstream, commercial mobile payments on an international level.”
