Cinterion launches multimode M2M module on Verizon to provide a bridge to LTE

Gemalto Gemalto

MobileCON, San Diego, USA. October 8, 2012 – Cinterion, Gemalto’s M2M business segment, today announces the launch of its PXS8 module. This is said to be the first industrial-grade multimode M2M module to enable global roaming for voice and data communications.

The new module opens up new business opportunities for global enterprises looking to launch M2M solutions on Verizon Wireless’ network. Developed for use on Verizon Wireless’s network and its international roaming partners, the new module supports both global 2G and 3G standards, eliminating the need for multiple designs for worldwide M2M solutions. Verizon’s M2M customers can now benefit from moving 3G service across the Verizon Wireless networks and abroad with one M2M module and one solution design.

Offering global high-speed connectivity and a surface mount, ultra-slim form factor, the PXS8 is ideal for data rich and space constrained machine-to-machine (M2M) applications such as industrial PDAs, global tracking and tracing, video surveillance or onboard vehicle Internet solutions. With the latest long-life chipset technology and a footprint prepared for forthcoming LTE modules, the new module provides a flexible path to the future for M2M applications requiring next-generation LTE mobile broadband connectivity.

“Gemalto’s Cinterion module, working seamlessly across Verizon Wireless and our roaming partners worldwide will create an effective environment for multinational companies to create new M2M business opportunities,” said John Sullivan, executive director of machine-to-machine platform for Verizon Enterprise Solutions.

“This is an important development bridging the boundaries between two technologies and thus advancing the state of machine-to-machine applications on a global basis,” added Norbert Muhrer, senior vice president, Gemalto Cinterion M2M segment. “We are glad to build M2M business on top of the well established partnership between Verizon and Gemalto and thus stimulate new business opportunities.”
