Landis+Gyr brings smart metering to Finland’s capital

Landis+Gyr, a global smart metering provider, has enabled Helen Electricity Network in Finland to complete its smart metering deployment project. The development sees the entire Helsinki electricity distribution network move into the smart metering age.

Landis+Gyr and Helen jointly developed an innovative functionality for dynamic load control of electric heating.

The functionality enables automatic control of storage heaters based on day-ahead market prices and the projected demand of heating time in relation to the outside temperature.

The smart meter receives daily instructions to control the heater, ensuring that it is switched on when electricity is at its cheapest.

This functionality could help end-consumers living in detached houses to save up to 100 Euros on their annual electricity bill without a need to invest in new equipment, or make modifications to their existing electrical appliances.

The advanced functionality is being used for controlling heating in approximately 1,400 households in Helsinki that derive their heat from storage heaters, totaling approximately 40 megawatts (MW).

The same functionality may be used to control other electrical loads in the future, for example electric vehicles.

“Landis+Gyr was able to provide a solution that meets our needs, integrate it into our existing IT environment and carry out a turnkey project for 200,000 smart meters. That was not an easy task, but we managed to do it on time – thanks to the good cooperation and expertise of the supplier,” said Mika Nousiainen, project manager, AMM projects at Helen Electricity Network.

The package delivered by Landis+Gyr to Helen included smart meters and software, integration management of the Gridstream solution into utility IT systems, project management and rollout support as well as meter reading services for the next 10 years.

Landis+Gyr’s smart metering solution Gridstream offers a complete portfolio of meters, standardised communication technologies and software for multi-energy smart metering. The complete end-to-end solution ensures a seamless flow of information and provides tools for personal energy management and network management support.
