Gemalto receives two awards for advancing M2M technology across Europe

Gemalto, a world leader in digital security, has been honoured with two prestigious awards for enabling secure connectivity in a benchmark European eCall pilot programme that advances this important technology across the European Union (EU).

Gemalto is the recipient of the 2013 iMobility Industry&Technology Award celebrating the most ambitious and innovative iMobility deployments, sponsored by the European Commission. Gemalto is also the winner of the 2013 ERTICO1 HeERO Award for outstanding contribution to the pre-deployment of a Pan-European eCall system.

In the event of a road incident, the Gemalto solution automatically establishes a two-way emergency ‘112’ call and securely communicates incident time, location, vehicle identification number and other details to the nearest Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP). Emergency response teams are dispatched in real time and the driver and passengers can communicate with PSAP operators via a hands-free voice call.

The HeERO programme aligns pre-deployment in 15 participating EU member states synchronising wireless systems and emergency response across country and network borders. The European Union is aiming to have all new types of pre-defined vehicles equipped with the eCall solution by the end of 2015.

“We’re honoured to receive these awards, which recognise our dedication to eCall innovation,” said Lars Thyroff, head of Automotive M2M at Gemalto. “Our contribution to the European eCall System is a next best step towards the “connected car of tomorrow”, aiming to make people’s lives more convenient through our dedicated automotive M2M technology.”

Gemalto (Euronext NL0000400653 GTO) is a world leader in digital security with 2012 annual revenues of €2.2 billion and more than 10,000 employees operating out of 83 offices and 13 Research & Development centres in 43 countries.

1 ERTICO is Europe’s Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) trade organisation.
