IoT M2M Council elects Digi CTO Joel Young as new chairman

Joel Young

The Board of Governors of the IoT M2M Council (IMC) – with 20,000 members, the largest and fastest-growing trade group serving the IoT sector – has named Joel Young, CTO of Digi International, as its new chairman.

Young has close to 20 years of experience in the Internet of Things (IoT) and machine-to-machine (M2M) technology sector and has been with Digi International, a global provider of business and mission-critical M2M and IoT connectivity products and services, since 2000.

Joel Young was reportedly chosen as chairman as result of his long tenure at Digi International, as well as experience in senior positions with Transcryption International, a digital security firm, and AT&T’s Bell Labs. The group’s plans for 2017 include establishing buying guidelines for broad-stroke categories of IoT solutions and establishing a new content channel that covers IoT regulations, tax initiatives and jurisprudence.

“We’ve made a firm commitment to start leveraging our collective capabilities to do more. The IMC has assembled the largest group of OEMs and enterprise users in the industry, and the data we’ve gathered about their demographics and buying patterns is very significant,” said Young, “The primary function of the group is to bring buyers and sellers in new applications areas together. I think you can expect to see the IMC creating more opportunities for its Adopter Members to participate in meaningful ways, including offering guidance to those companies on the Board that are solutions providers.”

The IMC is currently gaining over 300 new rank-and-file Adopter Members weekly, comprised of enterprise users, OEMs, and apps developers, across more than 24 different vertical market sectors, with distribution around the globe.

Some of the group’s recent projects include the formation of its Connected Leadership Committee, a group of IoT users mostly from Fortune 500 companies that convenes quarterly, and the development of its IoT Readiness Calculator, a software widget survey tool that is deployed by its Board member companies for data collection and lead generation. The IMC also publishes quarterly research on IoT buying patterns.
