Adam Mayer, Senior Technical Product Marketing manager at Qlik, loves seeing old companies with new IoT strategies.
- As a child what job did you want to have when you grew up?
A Special FX artist. Way back in 1977, at the tender age of 7 years old, when I first saw Star Wars I was amazed by the effects, how they did it and thought to myself “that’s what I want to do when I grow up”.
2. If you had one business lesson to share with your younger self what would it be?
It’s ok to make mistakes, as long as you learn from them. Either that or “don’t buy those red trousers from Top Man!”
3. Which Internet of Things (IoT) use case has recently fired your imagination?
I love seeing companies that have been around for years adopting an IoT strategy. For example pest control company Rentokil Initial, founded in 1925, has recently embarked on an IoT strategy. The company has over 20,000 connected rodent control products, generating more than three million pieces of data, across 12 countries globally.
IoT-generated data is enabling the creation of new digital services such as automatically alerting technicians when a rodent is caught, and keeping customers informed through online portals, which has enabled them to offer new ways of doing business.
4. What lessons have you learned from doing business in other countries or organisations?
One size does not fit all, listen to the local experts and prepare to adapt accordingly. Oh, and laughter is universal!
