Mobileye and Munich Re US collaborate to reduce collisions for public and commercial drivers

Mobileye, an Intel company providing advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving technologies, is collaborating with an insurance partner to reduce commercial fleet collisions and enhance road safety in the United States.

Beginning immediately, Munich Reinsurance America Inc. (Munich Re, US) will make available Mobileye’s aftermarket Advanced Collision Avoidance System to its clients, including commercial fleets. The new program will provide Munich Re, US clients with the option of retrofitting existing vehicles with Mobileye ADAS technology, designed to help mitigate the potential for collisions among fleets and improve driver behavior through the use of warning signals.

Munich Re, US will also conduct a loss analysis to help quantify the potential impact of Mobileye’s technology on a client company’s portfolio of commercial fleet business.

Following an increase in traffic fatalities in the U.S. over the last few years, the partnership is said to be  timely and underscores the importance of innovative collaborations that directly address the growing challenge of automobile collisions and resulting fatalities. For example, in 2016, there were more than 40,000 traffic fatalities in the U.S., according to the National Safety Council (NSC). This represented a 6% increase over 2015.

The NSC estimates the cost of deaths, injuries and property damage attributed to crashes in 2016 totalled $432.5 billion (€361.85 billion), up 12% over the previous year. Mobileye crash avoidance systems have helped its users reduce overall crashes by 60% including a 43% reduction in lane departure-type crashes and a 95% reduction in forward collisions.

“As Americans drive more miles and engage in activities that take their attention off the road, such as texting and talking on cellphones, the number of traffic crashes and fatalities has grown. Adding a crash avoidance system to a company’s risk management program for its fleet of vehicles can help mitigate the risk of a crash,” said Mike Scrudato, senior vice president and strategic innovation leader, Munich Re, US.

“Our partnership with Mobileye offers our client companies and their customers with a range of fleet vehicles – from auto to light- and heavy-duty trucks to buses – tools to help reduce property losses and help save lives.”

“Mobileye’s vision safety technology saves lives. We applaud Munich Re, US for embracing forward-looking technology and providing such an innovative offering to their portfolio of clients,” said Moran David, general manager, U.S. and Canada, Mobileye, an Intel company.

“The ability to improve driver habits with real-time feedback coupled with re/insurance protection will provide companies with a well-rounded risk management solution for their fleets that improves road safety for everyone.”

Mobileye’s aftermarket life-saving ADAS system alerts drivers of impending collisions so that the driver can react in time to take action. Enabled by a high-resolution vision sensor that analyses potential hazardous scenarios in real time, the cutting-edge technology provides warnings in advance of potential forward collisions, dangerous contact with pedestrians and cyclists, and unintentional lane departures. The system consists of a windshield-mounted vision sensor and a visual display unit mounted in the cabin.
