Harnham partners with Women in Data and In2ScienceUK to fight for diversity

Dave Farmer of Harnham

Harnham, a global provider of Data & Analytics recruitment, has launched two new partnerships, with Women in Data (USA) and In2ScienceUK (UK), to provide more career opportunities and resources for groups that are underrepresented in the Data & Analytics industry.

The announcement of the new partnerships is more critical now than ever, as women represent just 1 in 4 of all roles in the sector, while the gender pay gap currently stands at 17%.

Harnham, Women in Data and In2ScienceUK each share a commitment to building a more representative industry that is reflective of the individuals that it employs and serves.

In2ScienceUK was founded in 2010 by Dr. Rebecca McKelvey, who aimed to provide young people from low-income and disadvantaged backgrounds an opportunity to gain practical insight into the STEM sector, as well as the knowledge and confidence to progress to university.

Harnham will support In2ScienceUK with their alumni programme, helping graduates from underprivileged backgrounds (the majority of whom are minority ethnic and female) with career advice. As well as making financial contributions, the Data & Analytics recruiters will be running training webinars, providing online resources, and offering 1-2-1 and seminar style coaching sessions.

With Women in Data in the US, Harnham will offer training webinars and learning resources. It is also offering a direct referral scheme where Women in Data will send Harnham candidates looking to enter the industry or searching for a new challenge.

All referrals will be provided with comprehensive and tailored advice. The focus is to offer more opportunities to women in the industry, in particular at leadership levels.

Dave Farmer, CEO of Harnham says, “We are delighted to be teaming up with Women in Data and In2ScienceUK. They each share our commitment and determination to provide more opportunities for underrepresented groups in the Data & Analytics industry and provide them with the opportunities to progress and achieve their ambitions which is now more important than ever.

“We know there is an issue with our industry. Our recently published Diversity Report found that Data & Analytics has double the number of privately educated professionals as the national UK average.

“In the US, only 27% of Data & Analytics roles are held by women, where there is a pay gap of 17%. Additionally, 13% of respondents in our Diversity Report also revealed that they have no women in their leadership team.

“We believe that the industry won’t become more diverse without systemic change and a significant amount of this lies in education, entry-level and future leadership opportunities.

“This is why our partnerships with Women in Data and In2ScienceUK are so important to us. Our aim is to develop this important relationship as we go. The sky is the limit.”

Sadie St Lawrence of Women In Data says, “We’re thrilled to have formed this partnership with Harnham, as an organisation that is leading the way in Data & Analytics recruitment, this is such an exciting opportunity for us both to share knowledge and engage with our talent pools. The values and mission and what Harnham stands for pairs well with our values as well as that of our members, and we’re looking forward to what is to come.”

Rebecca McKelvey of In2ScienceUK says, “We’re incredibly excited to be partnering with Harnham in the year ahead. We know how important visible role models and leaders are, and we hope this partnership will allow us to build on this important work in diversity and inclusion.

Through our work at In2ScienceUK, we place people into work placements, and I always used to think it’s going to be the research or the work they love, and it never is. It’s always that inspirational role model figure in the organisation.”

This comes as Harnham launches the global salary survey for Data & Analytics professionals. This tenth anniversary ‘Decade in Data’ report will review the evolution of the industry over the past ten years; from a relatively young and unknown industry, to one of the fastest growing and advanced sectors in the world.

The salary guide will chart the breakout success of employment within this sector, which has exploded to influence every corner of our lives in the last decade.
