Queen Mary University of London and Newham College have announced the launch of the London City Institute of Technology (LCIoT), a partnership involving a range of names from the world of business that will offer training and education and provide the skills that employers need to keep London moving forward as a global city.
Based in London City Island, close to Canary Wharf, and backed by £28m (€32.75m) in funding from the Department for Education and the Greater London Authority, the LCIoT will open to students in Autumn 2022, taking on 600 students in the first year.
Once open to students in autumn 2022, the Institute will specialise in delivering higher technical education and apprenticeships with a focus on STEM subjects such as engineering, digital and low-carbon growth.
It will also provide upskilling and reskilling opportunities for adults and play a key role in creating the UK’s next generation of highly-skilled workers. It is anticipated there will be 1,700 students by year five.
There will be flexible options for students including T-levels, degree apprenticeships, and other technical qualifications. Those studying at the Institute will benefit from state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, giving them an ideal environment for their world-class education.
The Institute, working with key employers such as Siemens Mobility, CBRE Investment Management and the Port of London Authority, will also enable people from under-represented groups to build valuable connections and access sustainable, well-paid careers.
