First 3G-only module aims to deliver compact, high speed data for American connected devices

North America

London, UK – To enable migration from 2G in North America Telit Wireless Solutions, a global provider of machine-to-machine (M2M) solutions, products and services, has introduced the market’s first 3G-only cellular module. The UL865 HSPA mobile data module uses a small VQFN form factor.

The product, which also incorporates a Python Script Language interpreter, is capable of running customer applications internally without the need for additional electronics. The new 3G-only UL865 data-only module series delivers HSPA data rates of 7.2Mbps downstream and 5.76 Mbps upstream and will be available in a variant compliant with band and operator requirements for the North American market.

The new variant was designed to fulfil the role of cost-optimised mobile-data adapter addressing demand surge from the North American market as operators start setting dates to sunset 2G operations and re-use spectrum with more efficient 3G and 4G technologies. The new product features a high-speed USB 2.0 port and a dual-band UMTS/HSPA engine delivering 3GPP Release 7-compliant data communications. It is also equipped with eight I/O ports, two A/D and one D/A converters. For streamlined application development and system integration the company offers RIL drivers for all major operating systems.

The embedded Python script interpreter allows processing core in the cellular engine to run customer applications which can, among other things, access a companion Telit GPS|Glonass receiver module directly for a complete tracking device. The new 3G-only variant operates on battery-friendly 1.8 Volt logic ideal for the wearable technology segment.  The 24.4 x 24.4 x 2.6mm sized 3G-only variant is compatible in form-factor and interfaces to the GL865 V3 GSM/GPRS module series and the company’s recently announced CL865-DUAL CDMA also targeting the North American market.

“The 3G-only variant of the UL865 features a VQFN packaging which is versatile and cost-effective in high-volume production situations,” said Felix Marchal, chief product officer at Telit Wireless Solutions. “This further contributes to the product’s effectiveness as a compact, cost-effective solution for 3G mobile-data applications in North America including usage-based insurance (UBI) OBDII pluggable devices. This new product is particularly important because together with the CL865-DUAL, a fully compatible CDMA module, it offers our American customers the opportunity to design an application once and deploy it either on CDMA or HSPA networks in that market.”

Reducing technical risk and shortening time to market for OEMs and integrators, Telit aims to leverage its broad M2M portfolio in cellular, short range and positioning technologies paired with m2mAIR services covering application enablement as well as mobile network and internet / cloud sides of connectivity.

Telit Wireless Solutions (AIM: TCM listed under Telit Communications PLC), is a global enabler of M2M communications providing cellular, short range and positioning modules; and through its business unit m2mAIR, M2M managed and value added services, in application enablement and connectivity including mobile network side and cloud. With over 12 years exclusively in M2M, the company constantly advances technology through seven R&D centres around the globe; marketing products and services in over 80 countries.
