A historic milestone has been reached in the European energy sector as the penetration of smart electricity metering has now passed the 50% mark. This could be concluded in the latest study of the European smart metering market from the IoT analyst firm Berg Insight, which has tracked the development of the market since 2004.

According to a new research report from the IoT analyst firm, Berg Insight, the installed base of urban air quality monitoring devices reached 73,000 units in 2020 and will grow at a CAGR of 34% to reach 315,000 units in 2025.

Berg Insight has found that the installed base of smart electricity and gas meters in Europe was 168.3 million in 2019. The installed base is forecast to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.9% to reach 280.4 million units in 2025.
