Russian transport telematics installations fell 15% in 2014, Omnicomm survey shows

The Analytical Center of Omnicomm has released the results of the 5th annual research on the market of transport monitoring and tachographs in 2014. The survey was conducted in November and December last year and included 1,223 companies from Russia and CIS countries engaged in the development, manufacture, integration and sales of the systems for transport monitoring and fuel consumption control.

The study showed that the Russian market of transport telematics in quantitative terms increased by 340,000 equipped vehicles, while the growth rate relative to 2013 was negative. The number of installations decreased by 15%. Although the research conducted last year Omnicomm already recorded zero growth rate in 2013 compared with 2012. Less noticeable downturn affected the fuel level sensor and was 5%, which is 210,000 units per year.

The dynamics of new connections monitoring systems of transport and fuel level sensors for the past 5 years can be traced on the chart 1.

Omnicomm increased its market share from 6% to 9%, rising up from the 4th to the 3rd place in comparison with 2013.

The chart 2 shows the dynamics of sales among onboard terminals manufacturers over the past 5 years.

In the segment of fuel consumption monitoring systems which include special fuel level sensors in addition to terminals and navigation equipment, Omnicomm occupies the position (125,000 equipped vehicles) with  Technoton (22,000 equipped vehicles) and Escort (16,000 equipped vehicles) following. Accordingly, the market share of each company as compared to the year 2013 also increased. It should also be mentioned that the penetration of fuel control in the market of transport monitoring increased by 7% constituting 62%.

The chart 3 shows the dynamics of sales among fuel level sensor manufacturers for the past 5 years.

Omnicomm Analytical Center experts also conducted a comparative analysis concerning the number of connected vehicles to transport telematics software of well-known developers. The among software developers are Gurtam (110,000 new subscribers), TechnoCom (52 000 new subscribers), Omnicomm (29,000 new subscribers).

In comparison with the year 2013 Omnicomm increased its market share by 3%.

This year’s study also included tachographs. In 2014 most market players expected a certain growth in the market of transport telematics. The main factor for growth was primarily due the Order 36 issued by the ministry of transport of the Russian Federation which obliged to equip transport with the new tachographs which can perform the essential functions of transport monitoring and fuel consumption control.

In order to understand how many system integrators in the market are currently working with tachographs to date, Omnicomm Analytical Center conducted a special survey. The results showed that out of 1223 companies 48% are engaged only in transport monitoring, 41% – both monitoring and tachographs, and only 11% offer just tachographs exclusively.

The volume of the market of tachographs accounted for 100 000 items per year. The companies Shtrih-M (35 000 tachographs sold), Incotex (22 000 tachographs sold) and Atol (19 000 tachographs sold) became the leaders in this segment, followed by Continental (14000 tachographs) and KZTA (2000 tachographs).

Commenting on the results of the conducted research, Omnicomm executive director Alexander Selivanov pointed: “Omnicomm Analytical Center conducts such research for the 5th time in a row, studying the transport telematics market in detail. This analysis allows us to evaluate the market objectively and correct the company’s development based on the received data. It is absolutely encouraging that the vector of “reliable product plus quality service” chosen by the company allows us to grow even in the falling market. This year we will continue to further improve  reliability and convenience  of usage of our equipment”.
