In this piece, you’ll uncover:

  • The wide area cellular LPWA landscape -  The upcoming eRedCap is the ultimate replacement for LTE Cat-1 and Cat-4, with LTE-M and NB-IoT maintained for low power/cost/throughput use cases.
  • Changes expected for existing networks - MNOs in Europe are working to switch off 2G and 3G with support expected to end in the 2030s while in the US there’s a push to refarm the LTE spectrum for 5G within the next decade.
  • Growth of NB-ToT and LTE-M networks - LTE-M and NB-IoT network deployments have been growing quite rapidly over the last few years and of the top 50 global IoT markets, 39 had both NB-IoT and LTE-M networks.
  • When you should use LTE-M and NB-IoT - LTE-M and NB-IoT technologies are preferred for use cases where lower costs and reduced power consumption are required but a longer latency is acceptable like smart metering or in rural areas.

The time to think about new technology options is now. The total number of 5G mMTC connections is expected to grow from 436 million at the end of 2022 to 3.6 billion at the end of 2032 and that’s a lot of congestion on existing resources. With most IoT applications being low data and favourable to low power consumption, LTE-M and NB-IoT pose an attractive option. However, it’s understandable that many operations don’t know which of the technologies are most appropriate - often because new ones are added essentially annually, like RedCap and eRedCap.

If you want some clarity around LTE Cat 1 and Cat 1bis on 4G versus LTE-M and NB-IoT as part of 5G, jump into this detailed piece now.
