'Easy and cost-effective' monitoring of secondary substations to enable easy grid optimisation

Henrik Baek Joergensen of Kamstrup

European Utility Week, Amsterdam, Netherlands. October 15, 2013 — Kamstrup has released its OMNICON UtiliKeeper®, a component within Kamstrup’s OMNIA Suite that aims to provide important insight into secondary sub-stations and from there to enable easy grid optimisation.

OMNICON UtiliKeeper® is a next generation, smart grid component building on the success of the previous generations of UtiliKeeper®. But it comes with significantly upgraded 32-bit hardware, support for standard browsers from any platform (PC, Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Android smartphones) and offers security features matching today’s strict requirements. This solution meets the challenges of today’s secondary substation in the smart grid designed to show a simplicity matching a smartphone or tablet.

“An important prerequisite for the operation of a smart grid system is that grid operators have a co-ordinated and more complete pictureof the then-current load and voltage conditions in the electricity distribution network, including flow direction. The OMNICON UtiliKeeper® helps you getting that insight,” explains Henrik Baek Joergensen (pictured above), senior product manager, Smart Grid Solutions at Kamstrup.

The OMNICON UtiliKeeper® solution scales with the utility’s smart grid needs. Kamstrup says it allows any utility to start out simple and then grow as needs increase. It works, for example, as a stand-alone solution where alarms are sent to the operational staff either as SMS, email or both, or UtiliKeeper® can send alarms directly into the utility’s central SCADA system via the standard protocol IEC 60870-5-104.
