A new operating system is said to provide modern, HTML5-powered interface, tagging and templating features, and out-of-the-box security.
Tridium has introduced Niagara 4, the next generation of its Niagara Framework — an operating system for the Internet of Things (IoT). Niagara 4 includes dozens of new features and enhancements to help Niagara developers, integrators and users increase operational and energy efficiency reduce costs and maintain security.

Nino DiCosmo, president and general manager of Tridium, said: “Niagara is based on the promise of connectivity — between machines and people regardless of location and protocol. Niagara 4 stretches those boundaries. It has the ability to quickly collect and synthesise tens of thousands of data points, and visualise that data for building operators through a streamlined user interface. Additionally, the platform will continue to evolve through the innovation and success of the Niagara Community.”

Key benefits of Niagara 4 include:

  • Optimised operational and energy efficiency, thanks to deeper insights and faster problem-solving enabled by improved visualisation tools. These include dashboards and charting, which leverage industry-standard HTML5 and other open web technologies;
  • Faster build and install with standardised data models through templating, improving cost-to-serve, saving time and reducing errors; and
  • Enhanced security features, including role-based access control and code signing, making Niagara 4 secure-by-default and improving the usability of security features.

Niagara 4 has been in early release since 2014. In early 2015, Tridium launched the Niagara 4 Beta programme attracting approximately 300 applicants around the world. The large applicant pool allowed the company to test Niagara in a wide array of sites and live production environments.

John Sublett, chief technology officer for Tridium, said: “Niagara 4 is a great foundation for the Niagara Community to build upon. It represents a major leap forward in Niagara technology while also embracing the strengths of Niagara AX, which has served this community so well. Niagara 4 is an end-to-end IoT framework that allows connected device applications to be built quickly and more securely. It’s also the conduit to critical information that enables better decision making and business outcomes for service providers and system owners.”
