SMiD aims to make every cloud your own private cloud, with help from Indiegogo

Valle Fernández, SMiD Cloud

SMiD Cloud is a technology start-up aiming to create cybersecurity solutions that ensure the security and privacy of information stored, both in the cloud and locally.

Did you know that 72% of individual users’ loss of information is due to hardware failures? SMiD tells Jeremy Cowan that 3.1 million American consumers were victims of smartphone theft in 2013 and never recovered their data; a total of 6% of all PCs suffer an episode of data loss in any given year, and 31% of PC users have lost all of their files due to events beyond their control.

The fact is we can’t count on our hardware devices to safety store our information because they break, they get stolen, or we lose them. And our lifetime of photos and personal information goes with them. Fortunately, cloud storage makes sure our information stays intact but, despite its advantages, 88% of cloud customers were concerned with unauthorised access to their data.

SMiD Pro is said to be the only cloud privacy device designed for personal use. Its deep data encryption is immediate, automatic and continues 24/7, and only the information’s owners can access it because SMiD will only turn on with a physical start-up key that is under his or her control.

The device allows cloud storage users to enjoy the full benefits of any cloud storage (Azure, Amazon S3, Dropbox, etc.) while staying in control of their data. It merges storage and automatic back-up into the cloud storage use.
Asked by IoT Now how this will benefit users of M2M and the Internet of Things, Valle Fernández from SMiD Cloud said: “We think SMiD Pro fits really well with IoT users because it is a small and lightweight device you have in your home/office and there’s nothing to configure or install. Users just plug SMiD Pro in, set up their SMiD account and connect to select the cloud providers.”

SMiD appears as a local unit on the user’s side. Users only have to put their files in the SMiD unit and encryption will be immediate, automatic and continues 24/7. It gives users total control over the privacy of their cloud-stored files, photos, videos, legal documents, blueprints, contracts and anything else they entrust to cloud providers.

Fernández adds, SMiD Pro also “makes good encryption accessible to everyone and for this reason and for their friendly approach is the perfect home cybersecurity device”.
