'Wind-to-Home' dynamic billing demo at CeBIT 2012

Paderborn & Hannover, Germany. March 6, 2012: At this year’s CeBIT exhibition, an Energy & Service Billing Platform is being demonstrated at the Connected Living Hall 26 by Germany’s Orga Systems. The system bills for energy usage in line with fluctuating hourly spot market prices, and is being shown in a ‘Wind-to-Home’ scenario.

According to the billing system vendor, the dynamic prices trigger Demand Side Management (DSM) of selected home devices. The focus at CeBIT is on the substitution of fossil fuels such as gas and oil by wind power for heating water in private households at times when abundant, cheap wind energy is available from the electricity grid.

To integrate the system into the Connected Living IT architecture Orga Systems is a partner in the research initiative ‘Connected Energy – SHAPE’ which is co-funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi). All services are integrated into the Connected Living IT architecture and operate through a Home Service Platform (HSP) and a Service Provider Platform (SPP).

The end user saves on the cost of energy consumption while energy providers are able to bring additional energy to market. The substitution of fossil fuels reduces CO2 emissions which benefits the environment and society as a whole.

Key aspects of the system and demontration are:

– Users can activate dynamic price control for a device (value added service)
– Energy service providers (aggregators) receives forecasts of storage capacity
– Home automation systems switch the device (e.g. heating rod) according to dynamic energy price
– Users are able to prompt consumption and current expenses for the household (smart metering) and selected devices (sub-metering) enabled for Wind-to-Home tariffs
– Users receive weekly bills and notifications of interim threshold
– The system can be extended for other DSM applications e.g. heat-pumps, electrical vehicles
