M2M will be a 'key global trend' in telecoms, says report

Dublin, Ireland. August 27, 2012. (BUSINESS WIRE) — It may not come as a surprise to those already enjoying rapid revenue growth in M2M communications, but “M2M is going to be a real game-changer”. This is the conclusion of a new report from Research and Markets entitled, Global Telecoms – M2M a Key Global Trend.

It will transform every single sector of society and the economy, says the 31-page report. It will be out of this machine-to-machine environment (also referred to as the ‘Internet of Things’, or IoT) that new businesses, and indeed new industries, will be born.

With the development of high-speed broadband infrastructure now well and truly underway in many countries it is important to look at what will be the real value of this new infrastructure. The infrastructure that is now being built offers a range of features such as ubiquitousness, affordability, low latency, high speed and high capacity. It will link millions of devices, such as sensors, that will enable us to manage our environment, traffic, infrastructures, and our society as a whole much more efficiently and effectively.

Many ICT companies are increasing their presence in countries that either have developed or are developing high-speed infrastructure, Australia is a good example. Their NBN is an ideal test-bed for such developments. A great deal of attention is being paid to cloud computing and the NBN can be viewed as one gigantic cloud. Qatar is aiming to use its NBN to become a regional centre for the Arab countries.

This report provides insights into the developments in the Internet of Things and M2M. It also claims to provide “unique and valuable examples of smart city projects which provide an indication of the future potential of IoT developments”. The report includes information on the RFID market which has a promising future in machine-to-machine transmission applications and is already in widespread use around the world.

In mid-2012 an M2M alliance between seven major telcos demonstrated the growing importance of this sector for the future. Following this, a group of standardisation organisations also joined together in July to form oneM2M, an initiative which aims to develop common specifications.
